On the heels of her recent recognitions and honour by the UNICEF and EU for dedication to charitable courses, the Wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Chief (Mrs) Ebelechukwu Obiano on 18th June 2016 received the 2016 Excellence Award, and was made Honorary Georgia Citizen with further honour and commendation for “outstanding services and accomplishments” in a ceremony held at The Westin Hotels & Resort, Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America.
The 2016 Excellence Award was conferred by the Nigerian Women Association of Atlanta, Georgia (NWAG), the Honorary Georgia Citizen was courtesy of a proclamation signed by the Secretary of the State of Georgia, Brian P. Kemp, while the third honour and commendation was contained in a Resolution at Georgia House of Representatives.
Speaking on the significance of the award to Mrs. Obiano, President of NWAG, Dr. (Mrs) Stella E. Etta stated, “her NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) benefits the downtrodden and disadvantaged, provides medical assistance, and solutions to unemployment issues in Anambra State. These are all closely aligned with NWAG mission in empowering women, youth and children.”
Also presenting the Honorary Georgia Citizenship to the wife of the governor, Representative of District 35 Metropolitan Atlanta, Senator Donzella James expressed her appreciation as she read the citation in a special resolution recognizing the accomplishments of Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano which stated;
“May this Honorary Citizen be afforded every courtesy as a Goodwill Ambassador from Georgia in all her travels to other states to nations beyond the borders, beyond United States of America or wherever she may hereafter travel or reside.”
Senator Donzella emphasized that the honour to Mrs Obiano is special “because she is being honoured for outstanding services with the highest honour for any Honorary Georgia Citizen as our Goodwill Ambassador.”
In the same vein, the President/Chair of Georgia Legislative Black Caucus, Georgia house of Representative, Dee Dawkins-Haigler, presented Mrs Obiano with the signed Resolution honouring her for what she described as “outstanding accomplishments” in service to communities.
Accepting the honours from the three institutions, the wife of the governor thanked NWAG, the Senate and House of Reps for their gestures and assured that the award and honours would spur her to greater heights.
She called on women in positions of authority to use the privilege to make positive impact on society even as she dedicated the 2016 Excellence Award to indigent widows in Anambra and Nigeria.
Said Mrs Obiano: “Nigerian women in positions of power are well placed to make a change in the society. Although we are yet to achieve the desired parity in appointment to positions of responsibility, it is clear that the gap has been bridged. However, the question to ask is what impact do our women make? Even, as the wives of men in power, what level of support do we bring to the affairs of our husband?” She queried.
Mrs Obiano noted that her role as an active participant beside her husband, the governor of Anambra State, has afforded her an opportunity to live her passion of caring for the less privileged. According to the wife of the governor, “my passion for charity which started in 1991 has blossomed to the current heights due to the support and mutual commitment of my husband Governor Willie Obiano who also donated his monthly salary to CAFÉ. On the other hand, she opined, “I support my husband’s administration in Anambra State by ensuring that the soft issues of governance trickle down to many people who lack and often times are in need of direction or a little nudge to pick up their lives.”
Mrs Obiano whose silent dedication to charity is fast gaining wide acclaim and commendations at home and abroad, stated “I am humbled by the award which shows that the modest interventions I have been making in the lives of the less privileged through my NGO, the Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) has caught the attention and respect of a noble Association like yours. I am indeed honoured to be considered worthy of the award and I have no doubt about your good intentions. Rest assured that the award is already a spur to do much more charitable deeds. I hereby dedicate the award to indigent widows.”
She also highlighted some of the projects of CAFÉ in two years. These include; building of ten prototype 2-Bedroom bungalows under Phase one of the CAFE Housing for Indigent Widows and handed over to beneficiaries across the three Senatorial Districts of Anambra State; and also CAFÉ Market Toilets to promote hygiene in rural communities.
CAFÉ she stated has empowered over one thousand indigent women with skills training and start-up stipend/equipment in various Hair Dressing and Beauty Therapy, Fashion Design, Cake Baking and Confectionery, Telephone Repairs, and Community Health Services. “We have made possible free Prosthetic limbs to over a thousand physically challenged, and gave free wheel chairs to many more. We also sponsored free surgeries for over 50 children with congenital abnormality of Cleft lip and Cleft palate as well as cared for the mentally unwell, 27 of who were recently discharged amongst other interventions.”
The 2016 Award of Excellence which was conferred on the Wife of the governor for the programmes of her NGO, ‘Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ), also saw the Wife of the Vice President of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Mrs. Oludolapo Osinbajo honoured as a Woman of Valour.
